life is simple. people are complicated., careless, & my favourite person by Holly H Bercusson

life is simple. people are complicated.

when I settle like silt

under a busy stream

I swell with the thought of you.

scientists say (should we call them wise men?)

life can be reduced to processing potential

and when the time comes there will be no more

– the big freeze –

is what you’re giving me,

is what they call the end

– heat death –

everything still, settled.

who knows what comes next?

dead men say (we won’t call them wise)

ending, the universe reabsorbs

itself begets us

all anew –

what do you think of that? –

and so and so and

so forever.

if I met my end like a universe

would we be content

to live it all again?

these aren’t questions we should ask

but live – with noble ignorance

of the end,

the beginning,

the end.

I am not wise

I wonder but do strive

for wisdom

fumble some moments

where I settle

like silt under a busy stream –

I swell with the thought of you.

careless

it’s raining in Auckland

sullen clouds wring themselves out

like dirty sponges

at a red light I meditate

on the peaceful beat

of my windscreen wipers

a church billboard advertises

eternal life

but static perpetuity sounds so empty

I’d rather just be nothing

I chew off a hangnail and spot

a ladybug on my wrist

how did you get here?

its carapace shines

I could ask you the same

I don’t always love living

but in a scramble with nothing

I’m always pleased to share a world

with tiny, careless creatures

my favourite person

we met where worlds dream

our lips, and hands, and soft breaths, and

[

I found the light that never goes dark

like violets in your lap;

I was never more than when you

loved me

your pre-raphaelite darling

girl burned so bright.

mountains

spirited away

from

  the dark

stone and shale

       carved

 out [

rubble

     debris and sand.

  more

   into

   more

    became

     known

  as

 a candle to

  wonderful things.

[

[

I take comfort now,

knowing I was [once]

destined for you.
